The unemployment rate in Japan came in at a seasonally adjusted 3.2 percent in January, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said on Tuesday.
That was beneath expectations for 3.3 percent, which would have been unchanged from the December reading.
The job-to-applicant ratio was 1.28 - the highest mark since December 1991. It topped forecasts for 1.27, which also would have been unchanged.
The number of employed persons in January was 63.99 million, an increase of 900,000 or 1.4 percent on year.
The number of unemployed persons in January was 2.11 million, a decrease of 200,000 or an annual 8.7 percent.
